NANOEMCA Secondment at Humboldt University Berlin: Advancing Expertise in Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction and Structural Analysis

03/11/2026
Between October 19 and 2 November, 2026, Professor Florina Dumitru from the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, Romania, undertook a research secondment at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Staff Exchanges project NANOEMCA.

During her stay, Professor Dumitru worked in close collaboration with Dr. Beatrice Cula, the local NANOEMCA representative, focusing on advanced single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques for the structural characterization of crystalline compounds.

An important component of the secondment was the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in operating single-crystal X-ray diffraction equipment and independently performing experimental measurements. Professor Dumitru actively carried out the measurements herself, gaining practical expertise in crystal selection, sample preparation, data collection, and experimental procedures involved in crystallographic analysis.

In addition to the experimental activities, the secondment provided valuable training in specialized crystallographic software for crystal structure solution and refinement. Through practical work and scientific discussions, Professor Dumitru expanded her knowledge of crystallographic data processing, structure determination, and the interpretation of structural results, strengthening her skills in advanced materials characterization.

The research activities contributed to the structural investigation of crystalline compounds relevant to the NANOEMCA project, while providing an excellent opportunity for the exchange of scientific expertise and experimental methodologies.
